As the new school year begins, I am excited and nervous with those crazy butterflies buzzing in my insides. Regardless of the fact that this is my twentieth year teaching kindergarten, I still get those first day jitters. The questions begin to form. What will my students be like? Will I have rapport with their parents? Will any one be interested in these workshops?
The first day was a success! There were the five criers with one runner. However, the day went smooth. Our first parent meeting is scheduled August 29, "Kindergarten Orientation."

The attendance for the first workshop was fair. I was planning for 70 parents; 13 parents from my class and 8 parents from the other three classes. The child care providers assisted in preparing and serving the food.
After a few informational slides, the parents participated well in small groups. The groups were asked to create posters about their daily schedules and how homework fits into the daily schedule. Each participant received a raffle ticket. Periodically throughout the evening, tickets were selected. Parents could choose "treasures" for their child (character pencils, crayons, stickers, pencil sharpeners, highlighters, small notebooks, etc...). Each group of parents chose a presenter. These parents shared their ideas regarding homework, scheduling, home supplies, etc... They shared the importance to schedule homework time and not to minimize its importance.
The next workshop date was provided. I am feeling positive at the result of those who attended. I hope to encourage the parents to be my best advertisement for future workshops.

I asked one of the yard supervisors about the menu for this workshop. I coordinated the childcare with the school’s secretary. I researched information on healthy boundaries, age appropriate for both home and school. After discussing goals for the workshop with the kindergarten team, the results were discouraging. One said that because this is a project for my class that I was doing great. However, no need to ask her anymore about contributing, she would not be attending any workshops for the parents. Another, said she had no time to make phone calls. The flyer will have to be enough. The third team member commented that due to teaching after-school, she was too tired to stay for the workshop. Also, there is no monetary benefit to staying. This was very disheartening nor can I deny disappointment. However, it is understanding if the teachers have not caught the vision. I need to be patient and continue to model by example. I created the presentation in both English and Spanish to meet the needs of the kindergarten community. I requested of my administrator that he provide the phone message reminding parents of the workshop. Lastly, I requested of my kinder team to assist with the distribution of reminders and to participate in the workshop.
Parents arrive and we begin with dinner. At approximately 6:15 p.m., cellular phones starting going off. We laughed when we realized that it was the school announcing the workshop at 6:00 p.m. A few minutes later another family arrived. I suggested to the administration we make the phone announcement earlier in the afternoon.
This workshop's attendance was lower than the previous and I was feeling discouraged. However, during the sharing time, one of the father's challenged the four dads present that they step up and be the motivators in their homes so that their children succeed. This encouraged my heart. Although we were few in number, we were strong in determination.

The second annual Christmas Tree lighting ceremony was fun. The Kindergarteners sang their hearts out with "Jingle Bells." The community "Ukulele Strummers" group was great to play holiday music, accompany the Kindergarteners and the sixth grade students.
On a couple of afternoons, on the Kindergarten patio, I consulted with parents regarding how to improve the workshops for the new year. The mothers shared that dinner is nice but not necessary. They prepare dinner at home regardless. They would be willing to contribute and bring goodies to share.
Also, I asked my colleagues if they could personally invite parents from their classes who benefit. One Kindergarten teacher complained that " parents are not interested, she does not have time to devote if they won't come to conferences." I offered to assist her in making phone calls if she thought it would help, maybe after Christmas break.

He stated that should I need anything, I can reach the night custodian.
One week prior to the workshop, I made both phone calls and home visits to personally invite parents. I placed a sign up for snacks and refreshments. Eight parents signed up and coordinated with each other what they would bring. It seems the same parents always volunteer. Attendance for the workshop was 40% of my class. After the workshop, the night custodian was unable to be found as I was cleaning up and returning equipment to the office. Beginning the first week, I continued my phone calls providing personal invitations to several parents. I consulted with several faithful attendees regarding workshop discussion topics and refreshments for the workshop. These conversations were conducted at our “Day 100” celebration and on our field trip as these are the same classroom volunteers & chaperones. They suggested several topics. I plan to include the topics in an upcoming workshop presentation. I asked for assistance from my colleagues to personally invite specific parents who might benefit from the workshop. I coordinated the childcare with the school’s secretary. I have been practicing with the students to sing for their parents, one of the parent suggestions. I requested of my administrator to provide the phone message reminding parents of the workshop (earlier in the afternoon). Lastly, I asked the kinder teachers to assist with the distribution of reminders.
The workshop was successful with a 5% increased attendance. The children sang with confidence. The main focus of the workshop was communication and maintaining the joy in learning. Kindergarten is foundational! We compared the joy at kindergarten and how it may change throughout the years. Parents shared personal experiences and strategies on how to keep the "joy of learning" for themselves and their children.

This was our final workshop of the year. Our school counselor created an anti-bully museum displaying celebrities who were victims who suffered and overcame bullying. Parents walked the museum with their children. Afterwards, we discussed ideas and thoughts on bullying, possible discussions at home, and strategies to overcome. Parents expressed surprise to some of the celebrities who now voiced their experiences. After our museum tour, we shared home activities for practicing reading and mathematics throughout the summer. There was lots of laughter and comparing as they practiced the activities. We rolled out the iPads for parents to work with their children on two specific websites: www.plazasesamo.com and gobierno de España "no olvides tus números." We shared a good laugh because only 10 out of 23 iPads had connectivity. This happened at 7:00 p.m. — what happens during the schools ay when everyone is trying to log on? LOL! One dad said "let's go back to the good and reliable blackboard!"

Tonight was truly celebratory! We had a thunderstorm earlier in the afternoon. Even a couple of teachers expressed that I cancel due to inclement weather. I was not going to cancel! Food was already prepared and invitations had been sent out. Thankfully, the weather cleared. My husband and I decorated the multipurpose room with balloons and flowers. We printed the parent certificates. Twenty-seven parents attended, representing 20 students. Students led the parents in the flag salute and sang "This Land is Your Land." I was so proud of them!
Our district's Family Involvement representative was in attendance. She encouraged parents to dream big for their children! She motivated them to continue learning! As I was presenting the parent certificates, I was very encouraged that these parents dedicated their time to the betterment of themselves and their children for education excellence. I am so pleased to have held these workshops and to build relationships with these families.

¡Yo no me iba a cancelar! Veinte y siete padres asistieron, representando a 20 estudiantes.
As the new school year begins, I am excited and nervous with those crazy butterflies buzzing in my insides. Will I have rapport with their parents? Will any one be interested in these workshops?
The first day was a success! There were the five criers with one runner. However, the day went smooth. Our first parent meeting is scheduled August 29, "Kindergarten Orientation."
